20 Die in Mumbai building Collapse
Rains and Unrepaired Buildings
After the horrifying Delhi bridge collapsing last week, this time around a Mumbai building claims 20 innocent lives on Wednesday.
Apart from the 20 people killed that included women and children, a further 25 were injured when the old building in the crowded area of Bhendi Bazaar in south Mumbai gave way.
And the horror continues as more than 10 people are still trapped under the rubble. A rescue operation is under way.
The injured were taken to a nearby hospital, and among them at least 15 of them in critical condition. Late last year 29 people died in a similar building collapse in Mumbai. The excessive rains in Mumbai is a major factor.
The building was a 70-year-old three-storey structure... and people had little chance no matter what floor they were on. The Maharasthra state government will give compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the families of the dead and about Rs. 25,000 for the injured.
